ISO 14040
ISO 14040 provides the foundation for applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a key technique in environmental evaluation. LCA considers all stages of a product's life cycle: from raw material extraction, production, and use, to its end-of-life management.
The standard defines four main phases:
- Goal and scope definition: Determines the study's purpose, system boundaries, and required level of detail.
- Life cycle inventory analysis (LCI): Data is collected on inputs (materials, energy) and outputs (emissions, waste) of the system.
- Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA): Inventory data is analyzed to identify potential environmental impacts.
Interpretation: Conclusions are drawn and recommendations made based on inventory and impact assessment results.
Implementing ISO 14040 enables organizations to make more informed, sustainable decisions, identify improvement opportunities, and communicate their environmental performance more transparently.
