NMX-SAA-14067-IMNC-2018
The NMX-SAA-14067-IMNC-2018 is the official Mexican Standard for the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF). Published in the Official Journal of the Federation on February 5, 2019, it came into force on April 7 of the same year. It is based on the international specification ISO/TS 14067:2013, adapted to the Mexican regulatory context.
What does this standard regulate?
It provides the framework to:
- Quantify the carbon footprint of products, considering the full life cycle: raw material extraction, manufacturing, use and end-of-life.
- Communicate the results in a clear, comparable, and consistent way, avoiding misleading claims.
Its focus is exclusively on climate impact (GHG), excluding other environmental, social, or economic impacts.
Scope and applications
It applies to both:
- Individual tangible goods (industrial products, food, textiles, etc.).
- Services (e.g. transport, consultancy, distribution).
It is especially useful for organizations seeking to communicate their environmental performance, improve processes, or meet client, regulatory or value chain demands.
Relationship with other standards
The quantification of carbon footprint under this standard relies on the following methodological bases:
- NMX-SAA-14040-IMNC-2008: Principles and framework for life cycle assessment (LCA).
- NMX-SAA-14044-IMNC-2008: Requirements and guidelines to conduct a complete LCA.
These standards enable a robust and consistent analysis of each life cycle stage.
Benefits of implementation
- Transparency: Improves communication about climate impact of products.
- Competitive advantage: Helps stand out in climate-conscious markets.
- Strategic decisions: Provides useful data to redesign processes, select suppliers, or assess materials.
Meeting customer or market requirements: Many buyers now demand this information.
