NOM-098-SEMARNAT-2002
The NOM-098-SEMARNAT-2002 is an Official Mexican Standard that sets the operational specifications and maximum permissible emission limits for pollutants generated by waste incineration facilities. Its main objective is to protect human health and the environment by ensuring safe waste management with minimal atmospheric impact.
What does this standard regulate?
NOM-098 is mandatory throughout the national territory and applies to all waste incineration facilities, with the following exclusions:
- Cremation ovens.
- Boilers and industrial facilities using waste as alternative fuel.
- Incineration of radioactive waste, regulated by the National Commission on Nuclear Safety and Safeguards.
Key technical aspects:
- Operational specifications: Minimum combustion temperature, gas residence time, and mixing conditions to ensure complete combustion.
- Maximum emission limits for pollutants such as:
- Total suspended particles
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
- Dioxins and furans
- Heavy metals
- Monitoring and control requirements: Establishes methodologies for sampling, analysis, measurement frequency, and mandatory reports to environmental authorities.
Complying with this standard is essential to ensure that waste incineration is conducted safely, in a controlled manner, and with minimal air quality impact.
